When I enable 3D graphics acceleration for my Ubuntu 24.04 LTS virtual machine in VMware Workstation 17, I encounter display anomalies at the login screen. After logging in, the virtual machine goes directly to a black screen and becomes unresponsive. I am unable to forcefully shut down the virtual machine. What could be causing this issue and how can I resolve it?
First, I accessed the system without enabling 3D graphics acceleration, and everything worked fine. I then tried installing VMware Tools, but encountered some errors, so I uninstalled VMware Tools and chose to install open-vm-tools instead, then reboot the virtual machine. Everything remained normal. However, once I enable 3D graphics acceleration (with max video memory set to 1GB), the aforementioned issues occur. Note: The same virtual machine configuration runs without any issues on another host machine that has Windows 10 and an Intel integrated graphics card.
