Issue: My third monitor is detected by the system but remains dark 99.9% of the time after performing an apt update and apt upgrade on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Initially, all three monitors worked fine, but after the upgrade, my laptop only uses two displays. The third monitor shows occasional glitches but is mostly dark.

System Information:

  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Codename: Noble)
  • CPU:
    • Architecture: x86_64
    • CPU Mode: 32-bit, 64-bit
    • Online CPUs: 0-7
  • GPU: Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01)
  • Display Manager: GNOME Display Manager (gdm.service)

Problem Details:

  • xrandr Output:

    Screen 0: minimum 16 x 16, current 3840 x 3240, maximum 32767 x 32767DP-4 (connected): 3840x2160 (primary display) at 59.98HzeDP-1 (connected primary): 1920x1080 at 59.96HzThird monitor: Detected but mostly dark, with occasional glitches.
  • The system detects all three displays (Built-in, and two LG Electronics 27" monitors), but the third monitor remains dark.

Steps Taken:

  • Checked the display settings, and the system detects all three monitors.
  • Tried reconnecting the third monitor and using different cables, with no success.
  • Rebooted the system multiple times.

Commands and Outputs:

  • xrandr output shows both primary displays are connected, but the third display is detected yet remains dark.

  • Kernel log (dmesg) contains the following errors:

    bash

[ 0.612652] RAS: Correctable Errors collector initialized.[ 7.246745] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE_NOT_FOUND (20230628/psargs-330)[ 7.246791] ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previous error (AE_NOT_FOUND) (20230628/psparse-529)

Kernel Version:

  • Output of uname -r: 6.8.0-41-generic

Driver Information:

  • Using open-source drivers. No proprietary drivers have been installed manually.

Additional Info:

  • I noticed some ACPI BIOS errors in the dmesg output. Could these be related to the issue with the third monitor? The monitor is detected in the settings but doesn't display anything. If more logs or details are needed, please let me know, and I will provide them.

Question: What could have caused the third monitor to be detected but remain dark after the upgrade, and how can I resolve this issue? Could this be related to the display manager, GPU drivers, or the ACPI errors noted in the logs? Any guidance or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.
